Silence, before the Rice-Planting

Rice has long been the staple food of Japan. There are three different types of rice, as you may know about short-grain rice (Japonica-rice), long-grain rice (Indica-rice), and middle-sized rice (Javanican rice). The rice grown in Japan is a sticky rather sweet short-grain rice. There are over five hundred and seventy kinds grown in Japan. Hinohikari, “the sunlight”, is mainly grown in Asuka, Yamato. The clear stream from Asuka River nurtures delicious rice here.

Rice farming requires a surprising amount of water. One bowl of rice we eat requires approximately 0.25 t of water from planting to be cooked. As Japan is rich in water, rice cultivation is flourishing in mainland Japan.

Rice-planting season starts here from Mid May to June. Before planting starts, the rice field is flooded. The irrigation is an important preparation for planting and also prevents weeds from growing. The flooded field in the sunset reflects the sky like a mirror.

This spectacular view is available only for several days. It is absolutely a fantastic experience for you to stand at the hill overlooking the paddy field before or after planting and feel the tranquility and the beauty of nature. The water surface becomes like a canvas changing its color as the sun turns various colors. The paddy field area is a well known photo shooting spot among local photographers. We strongly recommend you to visit there while you are in Asuka, Yamato during this special period of year.
